Protecting Rest When Life Feels Too Full

Hello Reader,

In times of over-commitment and creeping burnout, my sleep is always the first thing to go. I’ll push through the evening, convincing myself I’m just “finishing one more thing,” until I look up and it’s nearly midnight. Then, like clockwork, my mind jolts awake at 4:30 a.m. — already racing through the day’s list.

My sleep tracker doesn’t lie: too little rest, too many late snacks, too much noise in my nervous system. The data mirrors what my body already knows — when life feels too full, my recovery empties out.

Lately, I’ve been asking myself: How do we protect rest when the world won’t slow down?

Maybe the world won’t slow down — but we can choose to. Protecting rest starts with small, intentional boundaries: dimming the lights a little earlier, breathing slower than the day asks of us, and refusing to treat exhaustion as a badge of honor. When I honor those tiny cues — a yawn, a sigh, the heaviness behind my eyes — I’m reminded that rest isn’t laziness. It’s repair. It’s how I keep showing up for my family, my patients, and myself with a clearer mind and a steadier heart.

🌿 3 Small Shifts I’m Making to Reclaim My Rest

1. Creating a buffer zone before bed.
I used to answer “just one more message” right up until lights out. Now, I give myself a 30-minute wind-down window — no screens, no planning, just quiet. Sometimes I stretch, sip tea, or breathe with my hand on my chest. That signal alone tells my nervous system it’s safe to power down.

2. Eating earlier and lighter.
My sleep tracker showed me what my body had been whispering: heavy food late at night equals restless dreams and early wakeups. I’ve started finishing dinner a little earlier and saving sweets or snacks for the next day. My brain thanks me.

3. Letting go of guilt about rest.
Some nights, I still wake at 4:30 a.m., mind racing. Instead of frustration, I try curiosity — deep breathing, gratitude, or jotting down thoughts so they don’t loop. Rest is no longer something to earn; it’s a daily practice of compassion toward myself.

As we turn the clocks back, what’s one evening ritual you want to hold onto — or begin again?

Take a quiet breath and share it with me — I love hearing your simple sleep rituals.

This Saturday’s time change is a perfect reminder that our bodies and minds notice every shift — even an hour. While the clocks fall back, our internal rhythm often stumbles forward. This week, I’m giving myself grace to adjust; honoring my natural fatigue instead of fighting it.

Sleep doesn’t just happen when the lights go out; it’s a rhythm we nurture all day long. Protecting it — especially during transitions — is one of the kindest things we can do for our mood, hormones, resilience.

So as we head into darker evenings, let’s treat rest as a seasonal practice – a way to align with nature’s slower rhythm instead of resisting.

With care,
Gina
