Half a Cupcake, Whole Lesson
Hello Reader,
This week, I’m sharing something personal: why I started wearing a continuous glucose monitor—and what it’s teaching me every day, meal by meal, about food and health. I used to enjoy an afternoon sweet almost every day, back before I could see the physiologic changes on a graph or had enough body awareness to fully recognize the signals my body was sending.
One recent treat made it crystal clear. Just half of a beautifully decorated cupcake from a fancy bakery sent my blood sugar soaring, leaving me with a pounding headache, irritability, brain fog, and an energy crash that lasted for hours. (You can see the photo proof on the blog—along with the small but steady internal shifts I’m making toward lasting change.)
What I’ve learned is that blood sugar isn’t just about desserts or diabetes—it’s a daily driver of how we think, feel, and function. Stable glucose levels protect our mitochondria (the energy powerhouses inside every cell), keep blood vessels flexible, and support clearer thinking and steadier emotions.
In the full blog, I’ll take you deeper into how food choices ripple far beyond digestion—and why every bite we take can either create calm or stir up chaos.

Blood Sugar–Balancing Meals For me, planning is the key to eating more optimally and staying aligned with my health goals. A colorful salad with fresh greens, red onion, strawberries, protein-rich eggs, crumbled blue cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil helps keep my energy steady and my blood sugar balanced. Packing simple, vibrant meals ahead of time makes it easier to stay focused and protect my health during a busy workday.
Brightly colored foods are rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, supporting vessel health and reducing inflammation. Every time we add more color to our plate, we’re shifting toward more optimal choices—ones that nourish both body and brain.

Over time, I’ve learned that keeping the right foods in my pantry makes all the difference. These six anti-inflammatory staples—olive oil, chia seeds, turmeric, dark chocolate, green tea, and flaxseed—aren’t just items on a list. They’re part of my daily and weekly rhythm.
Adding them into meals has become second nature: a sprinkle of chia in my yogurt, flaxseed in smoothies, olive oil as my go-to cooking base, and green tea as a calming ritual. Each one supports lower inflammation, steadier blood sugar, and better energy—helping me live out the Eat pillar in real time.
As we age, our metabolism slows, muscle mass declines, and blood sugar control can get trickier, making it harder to feel energized all day. But you don’t need calorie tracking apps or complicated math to stay healthy.
By using a simple plate method: veggies, lean protein, smart carbs, and a side of healthy fats, you’ll nourish your body in a way that supports steady energy, a healthy weight, strong muscles and bones, and long-term heart and brain health.
Pause and Reflect …
- Do your meals keep you energized or leave you crashing?
- How close is your plate to this balance?
- What’s your favorite healthy fat?
- Which meal idea will you try first?
Your answers can help someone else in this community find the inspiration to eat more optimally, too!
